France: D-Day Landings
Ordinær pris 169,00 krPublished to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the military mission that changed World War II, D-Day Landings: A Travel Guide to Normandy's Beaches and Battlegrounds is Bradt's new guidebook to visiting beaches, memorials, museums, battlefields and other sites associated with D-Day and the Battle of Normandy (Operation Overlord). A simple-to-follow, portable guide for independent travellers, it includes maps and driving instructions to help visitors go back in time to explore World War II history. Written by two experienced travel writers who, between them, are experts in France and military history, D-Day Landings is designed for visitors who want to see all or part of Normandy.
Covering the ground from the D-Day landing beaches (Sword, Juno, Gold, Omaha and Utah) up to Cherbourg and inland to Falaise, it encompasses every major site and a host of smaller, less well-known locations - venturing well beyond the coast to include sites associated with the capture of Caen and the closing of the Falaise Gap, which marked the end of the Overlord campaign. Although organised geographically - as befits a travel guide rather than history book - there's plenty of information on the historical context, identifying where sites fit into the timeline of the Battle of Normandy and escorting readers through the invasion in a simple, practical format. D-Day Landings aims to enhance the visitor experience by alerting readers to unexpected features, such as a German tobruk with a gun turret around which Utah Beach Museum was constructed.
France: French Atlantic Coast - Rail & Bike
Ordinær pris 179,00 krFrance is a rather large country, and while it can be portrayed on a map as a country, mapping it in segments provides an opportunity to concentrate on regions at a better scale. This map, covering the coastal region of France from the Cotenin Peninsula south to the Spanish border and east as far as Paris and Montpellier in Languedoc is the first of what we hope will be a series covering the country at an improved scale. This map is double-sided, covering from Quimper and Paris at the northernmost portion of coverage, to Angouleme and Clermont at the southern extreme on one side, with the second side covering from Bordeaux and St-Etienne south to Bayonne/Pamplona and Nimes/Avignon in the south. This is a part of Europe that has been fought over for centuries, and as such is dotted with fortresses proclaiming its historic importance.
This map has been designed with the leisure traveller in mind. Although it shows all motorways and highways, rail connections by train are emphasized, as are long-distance Euro-Velo cycling routes that are being developed in many parts of Europe. At this scale, it would be impractical to record all accommodations, but we have included a new feature that is thus far peculiar to France, and that is motorway hotels at rest areas. Naturally, the map is rich with places of touristic interest.
France: Gascony & The Pyrenees
Ordinær pris 289,00 krWritten by expert travel-writers with more than 40 titles to their name, Bradt's Gascony & the Pyrenees is the only current English-language guide to the entirety of this fascinating, relatively under-visited and consequently affordable region of southwest France. Offering advice on where to stay and eat with what to do and see, this new guide provides everything you need for an enjoyable, fulfilling visit. In Gascony, everyone can find their own adventure.
Surfers can ride Atlantic waves at Hossegor and Mimizan. Sun-seekers can loll on the Landes' beaches, then stretch their legs by climbing Europe's tallest sand dune, the Dune du Pilat. Hikers can trek high into the Pyrenees to gawp at majestic cirques, while those less energetic riding a donkey uphill.
Families can bike along numerous backways, while cycling buffs cheer on the professionals during the Pyrenees stage of the Tour de France. Activity enthusiasts aside, the region will delight anyone who craves a slower-paced holiday in beautiful natural landscapes. Culture buffs can linger in the coastal art havens of Collioure, Port Vendres and Ceret, or discover Palaeolithic cave art at Niaux and Le Mas-d'Azil.
Pilgrims can follow the path to Lourdes. Fans of the bizarre can visit Salvador Dali's 'centre of the universe' (Perpignan train station) or La Pourcailhade, the pig festival of Tri-sur-Baise. Urbanites can enjoy the splendours of Perpignan, Bayonne, Biarritz and Auch, or take it down a notch at medieval Catalan villages.
For quirky retail therapy, shopaholics can browse the espadrilles for which Mauleon is famed or the berets synonymous with Oloron-Sainte-Marie. Gourmets will delight in the quality of local cuisine, from cepe mushrooms and poulet au pot to a flock of duck-based dishes. Cocooned within quiet, natural settings, yoga practitioners can calm mind and body with various wellness therapies.
France: North Rail & Bike
Ordinær pris 199,00 krFrance: South Rail & Bike
Ordinær pris 199,00 krThis is a brand new title for ITMB and an attempt to portray a changing travel landscape in a mapping format. Eco-tourism is a rapidly growing activity, with enormous potential. At the same time, governments are seeking to reduce carbon pollution by encouraging train travel, so ITMB is climbing aboard the movement by publishing a map encouraging train travel while still retaining the road network and noting all the long-distance bike routes in southern France by designated number.
This is, by its scale, a generalized map of that portion of France south of Poitiers or Lyon to the Mediterranean, so is more of a regional map showing biking opportunities than a detailed trail map. Nevertheless, it is an excellent map on waterproof paper showing cycling routes and tertiary roads that are suitable for recreational exploration. Naturally, motorways and main highways are shown as well. Legend Includes: Roads by classification, Rivers and Lakes, National Park, Airports, Points of Interests, Mining, Highways, Main Roads, Zoos, Fishing, , and much more...

France: The Vendée
Ordinær pris 279,00 krNew from Bradt is the thoroughly updated second edition of The Vendée, the only English-language guidebook to focus on this part of Pays de la Loire. Also covered in this guide to an increasingly popular French region are Nantes, Pornic, La Rochelle and the Île de Ré. Written by Angela Bird, who for almost 50 years has owned a home in the region, and award-winning travel writer Murray Stewart, and updated by adventurer Ed Cooper, Bradt's guidebook offers comprehensive coverage of a beguiling area, detailing everything from family holidays to walks, cycling, local cuisine and history.
The Vendée offers all the benefits of a destination that is well established with both French and British visitors, with easy access and short drive times via UK ferries adding to its appeal. Popular with campers and self-caterers, the Vendée's sunny climate and 140 km of sandy beaches, plus its tree-lined canals and open marshland, make for a diverse outdoor playground. Bradt's The Vendée includes suggestions for walks and the best places for birdwatching.
This goes hand in hand with a new regional policy of promoting recreation premised on nature and wellbeing. Thanks to the authors' rich personal history with the area, the guide also reveals the quirks and themes which give the Vendée its own distinct character, as well as straying just beyond the area's boundaries to incorporate La Rochelle and Nantes, both entry points for those arriving by air and both offering urban distractions for the occasional rainy day. Although the region has no true cities, or even large towns, the guide includes details of the many local museums which provide easily accessible insights into the bloody history of an area which has, at times, been central to the evolution of modern-day France.
New elements in this edition of Bradt's The Vendée include expanded coverage of France's most dazzling son-et-lumière show and new restaurant listings that reflect the region's growing reputation for wine and Michelin-starred eateries, as well as its long history as a paradise for seafood-lovers.
