Greenland & North Pole
Ordinær pris 179,00 krGreenland is indeed a fascinating place to visit. Granted, much of it consists of inaccessible Icefields that, if they melted, would detrimentally raise ocean levels to catastrophic levels. The coastal regions are, however, inhabited, and it is possible to fly in or take an adventuresome cruise with Linblad and visit the giant island. Three-quarters of Greenland lies above the Arctic Circle and ice bergs carved out of the many slowly-moving rivers of ice are commonplace in the North Atlantic. Due to sea ice, the notable attractions of the island tend to be concentrated in the southern third.
The original settlers are not the Norse, but Inuit peoples who migrated eastwards from what is now Canada’s northland. Although the area has been a Danish possession for centuries, only the relatively narrow Nares Strait separates it from Canada’s Ellesmere Island, and the famous Thule Air Force base is considerably south of Alert, Nunavut. The second side of the sheet is a separate map of the entire North Polar Region, centred on the true North Pole itself.
The Polar Region consists of everything north of the Arctic Circle, but this map extends the concept southward to the 55th parallel, thereby including all of Scandinavia, including Denmark, as well as all of northern Canada, northern Russia, Greenland, Iceland, Alaska, and even Scotland, Estonia, and Latvia. A tiny portion of Ireland and a goodly chunk of Belarus also fall into the range of this map, which is very interesting, and is unique. No other such map exists. It was prepared by the Canada Map Office as a project and is used here with permission. Believe it or not, as a result, this map is copyright by the Queen, as are all government maps produced in Canada. I think that’s a nice touch for an international map! Being a circular projection, the printing is from Canada at the ‘bottom; thus, the place names for Russia and Scandinavia are oriented from the perspective of a wall map. In other words, nomenclature is consistently downwards, not circular, so if the map is rotated, Russian place names would be upside down.
The significance of this map cannot be understated. It is the only one ever prepared as a survey-specific quality of every nation on earth that could consider itself ‘polar’. Its scale prevents undue detail, but we have noted a short series of trivia points of note, such as the difference between true north and the magnetic pole, or the largest urban area in the region (Murmansk), or the location of the most northerly known thermal hot spring (Alaska). The urban area closest to the North Pole is Alert, at the top end of Canada’s Ellesmere Island, at about the 83rd parallel. Both these maps are so interesting that they are easy sells. The cover is double-sided, so can be presented on retail shelves either with Greenland outwards, or North Pole outwards. Either way, it sells. Enjoy!

Canada
Ordinær pris 199,00 krCanada is too large to map in the same way that normal-sized countries can be portrayed, so we have prepared a political map of the country for this edition on one side, with each province or territory designated by a different colour and the road and rail network portrayed. Please keep in mind that Nunavut is four times larger than Europe, and that at least three provinces are each larger than all of Europe put together, and the vastness of Canada starts to sink in. Open this side and imagine spending six days and seven nights on a train just going from Toronto to Vancouver. This is a very accurate map, prepared by the Canada Map Office, and is in English and French.
The other side of the page is where we have become innovative. It consists of 10 large inset maps of particularly noteworthy parts of the country. For example, the Rocky Mountains and Yukon have expanded coverage, as does Newfoundland, the Toronto region, southern Saskatchewan and Manitoba, and the Ottawa to Montreal to Quebec City portion of central Canada. In other words, we portray the entire country on one side and the most important segments for tourism on the other side. The map is printed on a very durable paper.

Canada: Newfoundland & Labrador
Ordinær pris 189,00 krThe easternmost part of Canada is also its newest part and the oldest British colony. Generations before Jamestown was thought of for colonization, Newfoundland was a valued commercial entity of Britain. Before that, it was a Norse settlement and the only known Norse permanent settlement ever discovered in North America. Today, the province consists of two parts – the island of Newfoundland and the mainland entity called Labrador; hence, the joint name of the map. Side one is the island of Newfoundland, which can only be reached by air or by ship. Ferries operate from Nova Scotia to two destinations on the island, and there is a separate ferry from Quebec to the northern tip of the island. This side also includes the French Overseas Territory of St. Pierre et Miquelon and an inset of St. John’s, the provincial capital. Side 2 concentrates on Labrador, a much larger geographical entity. Most of Labrador is inaccessible for the average traveller, but the brand-new Trans-Labrador Highway has recently been paved and makes access much easier than even a few years ago. This paved highway can be accessed from Newfoundland by the ferry from St. Barbe to Alse, in Quebec. A paved highway leads east and then north to Happy Valley/Goose Bay and then westward to Labrador City, the only significant urban area in Labrador.

Canada: Toronto & Southern Ontario
Ordinær pris 199,00 krToronto is the largest city in Canada and the 5th most populous in all of North America. Strategically located on the north shore of Lake Ontario, it is halfway between Chicago and Montreal and within easy access to NYC and points south. Its hinterland consists of 100,000,000 people, so this is a city worthy of note! Historically, it dates from 1793, but its antecedents go back many more centuries. The name means "Meeting Place" in indigenous annals, and it grew rapidly as a centre of commerce and industry over the successive decades to dominate Canada. It is also the capital of the Province of Ontario and the centrepoint for most banks and insurance companies operating in Canada. Touristically, it has the largest airport in the country and is the access point for most flights from the USA and Europe, so tends to be where most visitors arrive.
The map shows the core of a vast urban expanse that contains almost all of the touristic sites in the city, from the lovely recreational outer harbour islands to tony Yorkville and High Park, in the west. All tram lines are shown (Toronto has the largest fixed rail tram network in the world), as well as the extensive subway system (recently expanded), and an inset map showing all of Metro Toronto. Side 2 concentrates on part of southern Ontario, from Detroit to Kingston and north to Barrie. This would assist visitors driving to Niagara Falls, which is still the Number 1 attraction of North America.
