High
Ordinær pris 299,00 krAn ambitious and magnificent new travelogue by internationally bestselling, prizewinning writer Erika Fatland. The Himalayas meander for more than two thousand kilometres through many different countries, from Pakistan to Myanmar via Nepal, India, Tibet and Bhutan, where the world religions of Islam, Buddhism and Hinduism are interspersed with ancient shamanic beliefs. Countless languages and vastly different cultures exist in these isolated mountain valleys.
Modernity and tradition collide, while the great powers fight for influence. We have read about climbers and adventurers on their way up Mount Everest, and about travellers on a spiritual quest to remote Buddhist monasteries. Here, however, the focus is on the communities of these Himalayan valleys, those who live and work in this extraordinary region.
As Erika Fatland introduces us to the people she meets along her journey, and in particular the women, she takes us on a vivid and dizzying expedition at altitude through incredible landscapes and dramatic, unknown histories. Skilfully weaving together the politics, geography, astrology, theology and ecology of this vast region, she also explores some of the most volatile human conflicts of our times. With her unique gift for listening, and for storytelling, she has become one of the most exciting travel writers of her generation.

Himalaya
Ordinær pris 199,00 krEmpires have collided here, cultures have clashed. Buddhist India claimed it from the south, Islam put down roots in its western approaches, Mongols and Manchus rode in from the north, and, from the east, China continues to absorb what it prefers not to call Tibet. Hunters have decimated its wildlife and mountaineers have bagged its peaks.
Today, machinery gouges minerals out of its rock. Roughly the size of Europe, the region is one of the most seismically active on the planet. Summers bring avalanches, rainfall triggers landslides and winters obliterate trails.
Glaciers retreat, rivers change course and whole lakes quietly evaporate. To some, Himalaya is an otherworldly realm, profoundly life-changing, yet forbidding and forbidden. It has mesmerised scholars and mystics, sportsmen and spies, pilgrims and mapmakers who have mingled with the farmers and traders on the Roof of the World.
Himalaya is the story of one of the last great wildernesses and, in particular, of the bizarre discoveries and improbable achievements of its pioneers. Ranging from botany to trade, from the Great Game to todays geopolitics, John Keay draws on a lifetime of exploration and study to enlighten and delight with this lively biography of a region in crisis.

Trekking in the Himalaya
Ordinær pris 349,00 krStill relevant edition as of January 2025
An inspirational larger format book providing an overview of 20 memorable treks in the Himalaya. A stunning collection of all the best trekking ideas throughout the Himalayan range, they include such well-known classics as the treks to Everest, K2 and Kangchenjunga base camps, and the Annapurna and Manaslu Circuits. The ultra-long Lunana Snowman Trek and a kora around sacred Mount Kailash in Tibet are also included.
There are epic glacier treks like that to Pakistan's Snow Lake; following in the footsteps of Shipton and Tilman towards Nanda Devi, and the approach to Gangkar Punsum - the world's highest unclimbed peak located in remote Bhutan. Unlike a conventional guidebook, detailed route descriptions are not included; the book is, however, an excellent planning resource for those who wish to venture into the Himalayas. It looks at each route in turn and provides a snapshot of what makes the trek special, helping you choose the best routes to walk.

Pakistan
Ordinær pris 219,00 krITM har kart over hele verden og de spesialiserer seg på land litt utenfor allfarvei. Beliggenheten til landets nasjonalparker, historiske monumenter, de viktigste veiene o.L. Finner du inkludert i kartene. Samtlige landkart har ofte et bykart over hovedstaden.
Fra ITM: Pakistan was created out of the dismemberment of British India as a sanctuary for Muslims displaced by sectional fighting in the immediate post-WW2 era. Relations between India and Pakistan have been testy ever since, although the passage of time has made both countries aware that they need each other. That said, Pakistan is a lovely country to visit and explore. Side 1 concentrates on the southern portion of the country and includes an inset of the main city, Karachi. The south also shares long border areas with Iran, Afghanistan, and India, small portions of which are included. We have updated the road network to show recently completed motorway-like roads. The northern portion fills Side 2, continuing the long border with Afghanistan and the ill-defined borders with China and India. There is much to see in this part of Pakistan, such as the city of Quetta in the west, Islamabad, the capital, ancient Lahore, and the Hunza Valley, all of which are noted in our Top Attractions list. The north is truly adventuresome travel, and it is possible to drive the fabulous Karakoram Highway towards China, one of the most amazing road trips anywhere. However, although the contested Kashmir region is shown on the map (because it’s there), visitors need to be aware that this is a volatile part of the world and should avoid it. This is a country that is much less visited than it should be.

Seeds of Terror
Ordinær pris 149,00 krSeeds of Terror will reshape the way you think about the West's enemies, revealing them less as ideologues and more as criminals who earn billions of pounds every year off the opium trade. With the breakneck pace of a thriller, author Gretchen Peters traces their illicit activities from the vast poppy fields of southern Afghanistan to heroin labs run by Taliban commanders, from drug convoys armed with Stinger missiles to the money launderers of Karachi and Dubai. Based on hundreds of interviews with Taliban fighters, smugglers, and law enforcement and intelligence agents, Peters makes the case that we must cut terrorists off from their drug earnings if we ever hope to beat them.
