Europe Eastern: Railway & Road
Ordinær pris 199,00 krEurope may be small in comparison to Canada, but it is densely populated and difficult to map as a continent while providing detail. Eastern Europe used to be defined as everything behind the Iron Curtain during the Cold War, but now it encompasses everything east of Germany and Switzerland, which means that this map covers Italy, Greece and the Balkan countries, the Central European countries of Romania and Hungary and most of Ukraine, Poland and the three Baltic states, and western Russia as far east as Volgograd, as well as much of Turkey. It is a combined road and rail map, showing motorways and major highways, fast-train routes in red and regular services in black. It also shows major cruise line routes, although many have been suspended due to Covid and political situations in Russia and Turkey.
Essentially, this is a map covering a very large area, as are our maps of Western and Central Europe, and our earlier map of Scandinavia. We have tried to make it politically correct, which is difficult considering the Russian occupation of Crimea and the Donetsk region of Ukraine and the on-going controversy over the ‘proper’ name for Macedonia, so we apologize for any errors. For simplicity’s sake, we have named most place names in English, so Roma is Rome and Moscva is Moscow etc. Fortunately, most English place names are the same in the local languages. However, being ITMB, Naples is Napoli, and Florence is Firenze, so don’t be too critical of us; we’re trying to reconcile differing perspectives.

Serbia
Ordinær pris 299,00 krThis new, thoroughly updated edition of Bradt's Serbia covers all the practical information you could need plus comprehensive details of Serbian history, geography, economy, politics and people, as well as food and wine, city life, hiking and outdoors and adventure trips. Significant improvements to accommodation throughout the country over the past few years are also covered, with a wide range of options included, from five-star and boutique hotels to backpacker hostels. Bradt's Serbia also has a strong emphasis on culture and the arts - music, literature, cinema and art - and on natural history, with a thorough overview of Serbia's best wildlife sites.
Serbia remains one of the least known corners of Europe although Belgrade, the capital, is becoming increasingly popular with overseas visitors, as is the second city, Novi Sad. Both are lively, cosmopolitan and welcoming cities with vibrant nightlife. In contrast, rural Serbia, with its hidden monasteries and gorgeous countryside, is an undiscovered gem.
This new edition covers everything from the development of the Savamala riverfront in Belgrade to village stays, archaeological sites from the Roman era or earlier (no fewer than 18 Roman emperors were born in the territory that is now Serbia, including Constantine the Great), public transport information, the EXIT festival and Guca Trumpet Festival and, of course, the country's sporting prowess: tennis star Novak Djokovic has won 20 Grand Slam single titles, while in team sports, Serbia has excelled at water polo, basketball, volleyball and football in recent years. No matter your interest, whether it be travelling on one of the steepest climbing railway lines in the world, the Sargan Eight line, visiting one of the largest Orthodox Christian churches in the world, Belgrade's Temple of St Sava, or wandering around the National Museum or Museum of Contemporary Art, both now finally re-opened, Bradt's Serbia offers everything you need for a successful trip.

Serbia; Montenegro & Kosovo
Ordinær pris 169,00 krSerbia, Montenegro and Kosovo at 1:385,000 on a waterproof and tear-resistant map with topographic and tourist information, published by Reise Know-How as part of their highly acclaimed World Mapping Project. The map is double-sided, with an overlap, to provide the best balance between a good scale and a convenient size sheet. Within northern Serbia most towns and villages have names in both Latin and Cyrillic alphabets; south of Belgrade, including in Kosovo and in Montenegro, only main towns and selected smaller places are also shown in Cyrillic.
Road and rail networks are easy to see on a clear base which presents topography by altitude colouring with contours, spot heights, mountain passes and names of mountain ranges. Road network includes unsurfaced local roads and tracks, and shows driving distances on main and secondary roads. National parks and protected areas are marked and symbols highlight various places of interest, including archaeological remains, castles and churches, viewpoints, spas, beaches, etc. The map has a UTM grid, plus a latitude/longitude grid at intervals of 20’, UTM margin ticks, and an extensive index of localities. Map legend includes English.

Kosovo & Western Balkans
Ordinær pris 199,00 krKosovo is the country that shouldn't exist, but does. When Yugoslavia fell to pieces after Tito died, Kosovo was lumped in with Serbia but was very unhappy with being a part of an Eastern Orthodox regime. It broke away, resulting in genocidal fighting until the Americans stepped in and stopped the fighting. The region was then placed under a European Union control in the faint hope that it would merge with Albania, or Montenegro, but it didn't. Relations with Serbia are still quite strained, but Kosovo is still surviving as a mountainous Balkan state. Fought over for centuries by Turks and Serbs, Kosovo is emerging as a small but touristic European country. This is definitely an off-the-beaten-path travel destination!
The second side of the sheet provides an excellent regional coverage for the Western Balkans, essentially Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro, Serbia, and reasonably large tracks of land for Hungary, Albania, and North Macedonia, showing the growing number of wilderness parks being created.

The Danube Cycleway 2: From Budapest to The Black Sea
Ordinær pris 339,00 krThis guide describes the second part of the Danube Cycle route, a 1647km cycle ride following the lower part of the Danube from the Hungarian capital of Budapest through Hungary, Croatia, Serbia and Romania to the river's delta on the shores of the Black Sea. The cycling is generally level with a few gentle gradients, mostly on quiet country roads or riverside flood dykes. The 32 stages vary from 30-96km, with some longer excursions and surfaces are mostly in good condition, suitable for hybrid or touring cycles.
Cycling infrastructure is generally good in Hungary, Croatia and Serbia. In Romania, where there is no waymarking and often long distances between places to sleep and eat, this guidebook gives a detailed route description, and maps for each stage at a cycle-friendly a scale of approximately 1:150,000. Off-route excursions enable short visits to be made to Bulgaria, Moldova, Ukraine and the Danube delta.

Minarets in the Mountains
Ordinær pris 169,00 krA magical, eye-opening account of a journey into a Europe that rarely makes the news and is in danger of being erased altogether. Another Europe. A Europe few people believe exists and many wish didn't.
Muslim Europe. Winner of a BGTW Members' Excellence Award: Travel Narrative Book of the Year - The Adele Evans Award. Longlisted for the Baillie Gifford Prize 2021.
Shortlisted in the Edward Stanford Travel Writing Awards 2022: Stanford Dolman Travel Book of the Year. Londoner Tharik Hussain sets off with his wife and young daughters around the Western Balkans, home to the largest indigenous Muslim population in Europe, and explores the regions of Eastern Europe where Islam has shaped places and people for more than half a millennium. Encountering blonde-haired, blue-eyed Muslims, visiting mystical Islamic lodges clinging to the side of mountains, and praying in mosques older than the Sistine Chapel, he paints a picture of a hidden Muslim Europe, a vibrant place with a breathtaking history, spellbinding culture and unique identity.
Minarets in The Mountains, the first English travel narrative by a Muslim writer on this subject, also explores the historical roots of European Islamophobia. Tharik and his family learn lessons about themselves and their own identity as Britons, Europeans and Muslims. Following in the footsteps of renowned Ottoman traveller Evliya Celebi, they remind us that Europe is as Muslim as it is Christian, Jewish or pagan.

The Madman of Freedom Square
Ordinær pris 129,00 kr Salgspris 99,00 kr Spar 23%From the Iran-Iraq War through the Occupation, this collection of fictional short stories presents an uncompromising view of the relationship between the West and Iraq, as well as a haunting critique of the postwar refugee experience. Blending allegory with historical realism and subverting expectations in an unflinching comedy of the macabre, these tales manage to be both phantasmagoric and shockingly real. For all the despair and darkness portrayed in these gripping stories, from spotlighting hostage-video makers in Baghdad to following human trafficking in Serbia's forests, what lingers more than the haunting images of war is the spirit of defiance and of indefatigable courage.
