111 Places in Nottingham that you Shouldn't Miss
Ordinær pris 299,00 krOften called the ‘Heart of the Midlands’, Nottingham has given the world Robin Hood, Raleigh bikes, John Player cigarettes and Boots the chemists - and it was here that Ibuprofen first saw the light of a petri dish to the benefit of a million hangovers. As if that wasn’t enough, Alan Sillitoe and D. H.
Lawrence went to school here, Lord Byron’s ancestral pile is just on the city’s outskirts, and it was here that King Charles I raised his battle standard at the start of the English Civil War – though precious few rallied to the cause. Local heroes include the cantankerous Brian Clough, who led Nottingham Forest Football Club to a pair of European Cups, the fast bowler Harold Larwood, who famously bowled Donald Bradman during the Body Line Ashes of the 1930s, and the charismatic William Booth, who founded a worldwide movement, the Salvation Army. Despite all this and much more, Nottingham wears its charms lightly, avoiding the tourist crowds, but this fascinating city has much to offer – and we have selected 111 Places to intrigue, amuse and illuminate.

UK: Skye & The Inner Hebrides
Ordinær pris 299,00 krBradt's Skye & the Inner Hebrides is the new, thoroughly updated, second edition of the most detailed standalone travel guidebook to this group of Scottish islands. Author Katie Featherstone, who loved the Inner Hebrides so much she moved there, features 20 inhabited islands, from the Isle of Skye in the north to community-owned Gigha in the south, plus the gateway towns of Oban and Mallaig on the Scottish mainland. Ransacked by Vikings, caught between warring clan chiefs and exploited by mainland nobility, the ongoing survival of Inner Hebridean communities testifies to the strength of their character.
Reclaiming an identity through their native Gaelic language, ceilidh dancing and traditional industries remains a struggle, but despite only around 20,000 people living across the region, each inhabited island has a distinctive history, character and culture. With a bridge to the mainland, Skye sees the most visitors; it boasts the most varied landscape and most obvious attractions, including its Highland Games. Other, smaller islands remain relatively remote and less affected by the outside world.
Pious Iona, Islay with its whisky, and Canna - where the village shop still runs via honesty box - all have their own individual charm. Beyond cultural intrigue, the Inner Hebrides are renowned for their wild places, striking a perfect balance between feeling remote and being accessible on any budget. Scotland's 'right to roam' provides infinite walking possibilities.
Away from the villages, miles of intricate coastline, with sandy beaches and towering cliffs, enclose swathes of heathery moorland and hills. Hikers can enjoy Mull's dramatic rock formations or Jura's 'Paps', with only a herd of red deer or a soaring eagle for company. On Skye, you can go beachcombing in the morning, then watch the Highland Games in the afternoon.
Wildlife-watchers can snorkel with basking sharks off Coll, listen for corncrakes on Tiree, admire wintering geese on Islay or spot dolphins off Mull. With extensive listings of accommodation and eating options, detailed transport advice, walking routes and packing lists, plus insights into history, myths and lifestyle, Bradt's Skye & the Inner Hebrides is the ideal companion for an enjoyable visit.

British Rail
Ordinær pris 199,00 krFrom ancient rolling stock to patchy service, stale sandwiches to the wrong kind of snow, British Rail - our last great state-owned organisation to be privatised - has received a terrible press. But after its controversial 1948 creation, British Rail was actually an innovative powerhouse that over five decades transformed the UK, creating one of the fastest regular rail services in the world.
Award-winning journalist Christian Wolmar takes us from promise to punchline, exploring British Rail's birth into post-war austerity, the many battles and struggles to evolve what many considered to be a dinosaur, and how, at the height of its success, the service was misunderstood and unfairly maligned, ruthlessly broken up and privatised.

A Pilgrim's Guide to the Camino Ingles : The English Way Also Known as the Celtic Camino
Ordinær pris 279,00 krCamino Inglés: This ancient route was popular with pilgrims arriving by sea from England, Ireland and Northern Europe in the medieval period. It all but faded from memory but is quietly coming back to life and now ready to welcome pilgrims seeking a more solitary way along the rugged rías of Northern Galicia. It was previously combined with the route to Finisterre which was described as the road less travelled but that acclaim has now passed to the English way (or Celtic way) that starts in Ferrol or A Coruña and now fully merits its own edition.
Few pilgrims walking the Camino Inglés commence in A Coruña which, at less than 100 km, does not entitle the pilgrim to a compostela unless they have walked an extra 25 km in their own country or combine it with the route from Ferrol. This provides an opportunity to visit the only site in Galicia directly linked with the life of Jesus - his first miracle in Cana of Galilee. By combining two distinct starting points we also come to understand the variety of pathways that the caminos de Santiago offer us, inviting further exploration.
This guidebook also seeks to find a balance between the outer and inner journey, between the practical and spiritual, which is why it is subtitled A Practical & Mystical Manual - that we might find a place to eat and sleep at the end of a hard day's walk but also, and crucially, that we might find the courage to dive into the mystery of our own soul awakening.

UK: London to Walsingham Camino - The Pilgrimage Guide
Ordinær pris 299,00 krA pilgrim path that offers a wonderful long-distance route, on footpaths and quiet lanes, across the glorious east of England. London to Walsingham Camino guidebook is a full colour guide to walking the re-established pilgrimage route from the Church of St Magnus the Martyr, with its shrine to Our Lady of Walsingham to the Anglican and Catholic shrines at Walsingham in Norfolk.
The whole 177.8 mile pilgrimage could be accomplished by a fit walker in a fortnight or less. But maybe you want to walk for fewer miles each day, or just at weekends, or on odd days when you have the time and energy. This guide caters for multiple approaches.
Walsingham was England's Nazareth. A fantastical tale brought pilgrims - kings, queens, and commoners alike - to Walsingham in the Middle Ages. In 1061 a Walsingham noblewoman, Lady Richeldis de Faverches, had a vision in which the Virgin Mary transported her soul to Nazareth and showed her the house where the Holy Family once lived, and in which the Annunciation of Archangel Gabriel, foretelling Jesus's birth, occurred.
She was told to build a replica of the house in Walsingham, and did so. The Holy House, initially a simple wooden structure, later richly decorated with gold and precious jewels, became a shrine and attracted pilgrims to Walsingham from all over Europe. Numerous kings travelled as pilgrims to Walsingham.
Walsingham was by far the most important pilgrim shrine in England until Henry VIII outlawed pilgrimage and the veneration of saints in 1538. It was much more popular than Canterbury. Not only that: in the whole of the Christian world it was eclipsed by just three other places: Jerusalem, Rome, and Santiago de Compostela.
Those places have enjoyed an unbroken tradition of pilgrimage and veneration stretching back a millennium or more. Not Walsingham. It reverted to being just a village in Norfolk once the pilgrims stopped coming.
The road from London ceased to be the most important route in England, and faded into obscurity. For 400 years, no pilgrims walked to Walsingham. Since the 1930s, when both Catholic and Anglican shrines were re-established here, Walsingham has undergone a revival.
It draws around 300,000 pilgrims each year, but hardly any of them walk much more than the final Holy Mile, and only a few church and other groups trace the full route from London. The London to Walsingham Camino guidebook is part of an attempt to change that: to re-establish a walking route which, while being as true to the original way as possible, takes account of the modern realities on the ground. A pilgrim path that offers a wonderful long-distance route, on footpaths and quiet lanes, across the glorious east of England.
A truly pleasurable and uplifting walking experience.
