Fra ITM: 2nd Edition The Rockies are North America's recreational back yard. Extending from Alaska to Mexico, the Rockies are one of the more recent mountain chains, having been formed about 30,000 years ago by tectonic plate movement. Previously, this title concentrated only on the Canadian portion of the Rocky Mountain region; with this edition, we have expend the coverage to cover the portion between where the mountain chain first becomes prominent in Canada's Yukon, down through Jasper and Banff national parks, and on into Idaho, Wyoming, utah, and Colorado. The chain extends southward through New mexico into Mexico and Central America, but we ended coverage Taos to show the bulk of this vast range of mountains. Inset maps of downtown Calgary, Vancouver, and Denver are included. Sorry, the simply wasn't room for more. A lovely map!

Fra ITM: Canadian Rockies: Banff, Kootenay and Yoho National Parks at 1:250,000 in a series of topographic survey maps of selected areas of British Columbia and the Canadian Rockies from ITMB with cartography from Canada’s national survey organization. Most sheets are printed on light, waterproof and tear- resistant plastic paper.

Whilst the Canadian Department of Natural Resources (previously Canada Map Office) decides whether to provide updated pre-printed editions of its survey mapping or switch to print-on-demand only, in 2007 it began co-operating with ITMB on this new series of maps with cartography of the Canadian topographic survey and additional tourist and recreational information provided by ITMB. The maps are double-sided, with either two 1:50,000 maps combined in one title, or a 1:250,000 map supplemented by more detailed coverage at 1:50,000.

In this title: four 1:250,000 Canadian Survey sheets are combined to provide coverage of the southern part of the Canadian Rockies, including Banff, Kootenay and Yoho National Parks, and stretching from the 50º north to Saskatchewan River crossing. Coverage east - west is from Calgary to the Upper Arrow Lake in BC. Elevation is given in feet, with contours at 500ft intervals (conversion chart to metres is provided). Extensive overprint highlights several different types of accommodation and camping facilities, recreational areas doe hiking, canoeing, horse riding, cross-country skiing, climbing, hand gliding, mountain biking, fishing, snowmobiling, etc. The map is printed on light, waterproof and tear-resistant plastic paper.

Fra ITM: Alberta at 1:1,000,000 on a double-sided, indexed map from the Vancouver-based ITMB, with topography presented by altitude colouring rather than by just relief shading, with street plan of central Edmonton and Calgary, plus of Banff and Jasper resorts. Coverage includes the whole of the Banff and the Jasper National Parks.

Road and rail networks are presented on a clear base with altitude colouring, spot heights and names of mountain ranges. Numerous national or regional parks and nature reserves are marked. Symbols highlight various places of interest, sport and recreational facilities, native reserves, etc, including parks with camping facilities and campgrounds. The map has a latitude and longitude grid at intervals of 1º; each side has a separate index of localities.

Street plans shows the main traffic routes in central Calgary and Edmonton, plus in the mountain resorts of Banff and Jasper, indicating locations of various hotels, selected restaurants, and other places of interest.

BC is one of our best-selling titles. This particular version does have one major new highway improvement to record, however. After years of construction, the TC (Trans-Canada Highway) from the Alberta border to Golden has been upgraded to full motorway standard as of this June. This is the most expensive highway project in the province's history and a welcome relief to truckers, caravanners, and the general public. Engineers overcame tremendous obstacles to smooth curves and alleviate gradients in high mountainous terrain. The new stretch of road shows on our map.

Fra ITM: This is a brand new title for ITMB. Calgary is the focus of Canada’s oil industry, the largest city in Alberta, and a major travel hub for international flights. It is the destination of choice for Europeans planning to travel around Western Canada. The city was founded due to the rail line being pushed westward to meet the line being constructed from Vancouver eastward, creating North America’s only trans-continental rail line. The annual Stampede Rodeo held there each July is a highlight of the city’s busy program. The second side of the map covers the southern half of the Province of Alberta and a bit of BC, with an excellent inset map of the town of Banff, and another of the Province’s capital, Edmonton. This map would be perfect for the short-term visitor wishing to explore from the American border to the top of Jasper National Park, and from western Saskatchewan to British Columbia; excellent road coverage, and all attractions noted.

Canada is a vast country in area; inconceivably enormous in European terms. It is best mapped as a series of regional maps and this is the first of two maps that we hope will portray the Atlantic coastline of all of North America. Side 1 concentrates on Newfoundland and Labrador, with a tiny bit of Nunuvut at the top end of the Ungava Peninsula. An inset map of St. John’s, capital of Nfld/Lab is included, as is the French Overseas Territory of St. Pierre et Miquelon. The new paved highway across Labrador is the highlight of this side of the map!

The second side of the map focusses on Nova Scotia/Cape Breton and parts of Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick, with a detailed inset of central Halifax. The former French fortress of Louisbourg is a must-see for anyone visiting Cape Breton, as are the many Loyalist towns created along the coast of Nova Scotia to house refugees fleeing turmoil in the American colonies during the Revolutionary War. A separate map concentrating on the Atlantic coastline of the USA is being prepared.

Fra ITM: To North Americans, there is only one “Great Lakes” – the waterway stretching far into the interior of the continent from the Gulf of St. Lawrence to the tip of Lake Superior. This vast region has exerted a fundamental hold on the development of both the USA and Canada; first as a canoeing trade route for trapping furs, then as a means of settlement, and now as a water route to move products to world markets. The region is also densely populated with well-known touristic cities and attractions, and houses in excess of 100,000,000 people. Surprisingly, until now, there has never been a map for this interesting and historic part of the continent. Using this map, one can explore Lakes Ontario and Erie as circular routes; also Huron and Superior; visit Ottawa and Toronto, Chicago and Duluth, and find Fort William or the Wawa Goose. This is a double-sided map covering from Ottawa in the north to Pittsburgh and Columbus in the south and Duluth and Thunder Bay in the west. Both Canada and the USA portions of the Great Lakes Region are included.

At the same time, the official name still recognizes the historical relationship of Queen Charlotte and the early days of British trading. We have added a new map of BC's coastline to the reverse side, covering from the US border north to Prince Rupert. As well, both sides have their own Top Attractions lists to focus attention on major sites, such as Ninstints at the southern tip of HG. The Atlantic coast of Canada is blessed with some of the earliest European settlement areas in North America. There are three Canadian provinces that have been traditionally called "maritime" - New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island. Newfoundland only became part of Canada in 1949, a century after the term Maritimes had become common usage, so is part of Atlantic Canada, but not the Maritime provinces. This double-sided regional map is great for those visiting all three provinces (ITMB also publishes separate maps of each province).

All the roads and towns are shown, as well as parks, camping areas, touristic attractions, and historic sites. The area is rich in history. Last summer, Lan and I took our two grandchildren on a month-long drive across Canada and visited Louisbourg, on Cape Breton, the French fortress that dominated French control of Quebec for many years. We also toured Green Gables, the actual farm made famous by L. M. Montgomery and her fictional Anne Shirley. Roosevelt's beloved estate is on Campobello Island, in New Brunswick. This is one of the most popular regions of North America to visit.

The easternmost part of Canada is also its newest part and the oldest British colony. Generations before Jamestown was thought of for colonization, Newfoundland was a valued commercial entity of Britain. Before that, it was a Norse settlement and the only known Norse permanent settlement ever discovered in North America. Today, the province consists of two parts – the island of Newfoundland and the mainland entity called Labrador; hence, the joint name of the map. Side one is the island of Newfoundland, which can only be reached by air or by ship. Ferries operate from Nova Scotia to two destinations on the island, and there is a separate ferry from Quebec to the northern tip of the island. This side also includes the French Overseas Territory of St. Pierre et Miquelon and an inset of St. John’s, the provincial capital. Side 2 concentrates on Labrador, a much larger geographical entity. Most of Labrador is inaccessible for the average traveller, but the brand-new Trans-Labrador Highway has recently been paved and makes access much easier than even a few years ago. This paved highway can be accessed from Newfoundland by the ferry from St. Barbe to Alse, in Quebec. A paved highway leads east and then north to Happy Valley/Goose Bay and then westward to Labrador City, the only significant urban area in Labrador.

Toronto is the largest city in Canada and the 5th most populous in all of North America. Strategically located on the north shore of Lake Ontario, it is halfway between Chicago and Montreal and within easy access to NYC and points south. Its hinterland consists of 100,000,000 people, so this is a city worthy of note! Historically, it dates from 1793, but its antecedents go back many more centuries. The name means "Meeting Place" in indigenous annals, and it grew rapidly as a centre of commerce and industry over the successive decades to dominate Canada. It is also the capital of the Province of Ontario and the centrepoint for most banks and insurance companies operating in Canada. Touristically, it has the largest airport in the country and is the access point for most flights from the USA and Europe, so tends to be where most visitors arrive.

The map shows the core of a vast urban expanse that contains almost all of the touristic sites in the city, from the lovely recreational outer harbour islands to tony Yorkville and High Park, in the west. All tram lines are shown (Toronto has the largest fixed rail tram network in the world), as well as the extensive subway system (recently expanded), and an inset map showing all of Metro Toronto. Side 2 concentrates on part of southern Ontario, from Detroit to Kingston and north to Barrie. This would assist visitors driving to Niagara Falls, which is still the Number 1 attraction of North America.

Fra ITM: British Columbia's famous Vancouver Island is one of the great touristic attractions of North America. It hosts the provincial capital at Victoria, Butchart Gardens, the logging museum at Duncan, the painted walls at Chemanus, Long Beach at Tofino, and the Totem poles of Alert Bay. It is linked to the USA by ferries from Seattle and Port Angeles, and by ferries from Vancouver and Powell River, as well as by float planes and airports. About 400,000 people live on the island, but the population expands to over a million during the busy summer season. The island offers something for everyone. All the urban areas are small enough to be easily walkable, hikers revel in the challenges of the West Coast Trail (for which you need a separate map), canoeists can take a week exploring the Broken Islands, and everyone can walk the twelve-mile Long Beach. This is a camper's heaven, with hundreds of wilderness campsites and thousands of kilometers of back road logging routes to explore, mountains to climb, and fiords to boat. No wonder this is such a popular travel destination! Inset maps of Victoria and Tofino are included.

Fra ITM: This map is a specialized hiking map of one of the toughest trails in North America. It takes a week to hoof it from Bamfield to Port Renfrew along the western coastline of British Columbia’s West Coast Trail. Hiking the trail is so popular that it is necessary to reserve a start time well in advance of arriving! The trail is contained within a national park, so camping sites are controlled and must be adhered to.

The map has a secondary purpose; it is a recreational map at a detailed scale for anyone wanting to explore the old-growth forests of this part of Vancouver Island. This includes the Broken Islands group, which is also part of the national park, and the Carmanah Valley Provincial Park, home of some of the tallest and oldest trees in the world. By the nature of a rectangular sheet of paper, the map also includes a wealth of logging roads, shorter hikes, whitewater kayaking areas, wilderness campsites, and the canoeing routes of Nitinat Lake. This is truly an amazing adventure map. The artwork is that of the Canada Map Office, with recreational information added by ITMB.

Fra ITM: Technically, this is a new map, but in reality it is our map of the Yukon, which has been combined with our map of the Northwest Territories. The reason for combining related mapping areas is well-understood; it makes sense. Canada’s northland is far too vast and far too disparate to show on any map and make sense for those trying to use the map to get around. Starting with Yukon (NB: not “the” Yukon, please), this portion of NWT was carved out into its own territory a century ago, as a result of the gold rush to the Klondike. It is the same map we’ve done since 1989, updated whenever necessary and includes inset maps of Whitehorse (the capital), Dawson City, and Watson Lake. It is still a territory, not a full province, although essentially self-administering. The federal government has just announced a massive infrastructure improvement program to extend and improve roads, but these will take many years to complete.

The NWT side of the sheet shows the brand new all-season gravel road to Tuktoyaktuk on the Arctic Ocean, opening up this part of Canada for land travel for the first time. Much of this roadway had to be built on top of frozen tundra and be built in such a way as to not interfere with cariboo migrations, so was not only a major engineering feat but was designed to minimize environmental disruption. An inset map of Yellowknife (the capital) is included.

The Caribbean Sea is one of the most popular cruising destinations in the world. This colourful double-sided map starts just north of Orlando/Tampa in order to show the northernmost Bahamian islands and south as far as the Panama Canal at Colon and the coast of Venezuela. The map shows good detail for each island and the legal boundaries of each island nation. Side 1 concentrates on the western Caribbean, essentially the Bahamas, Cuba, Jamaica, and the Cayman Islands. Here's a fun fact most of you won't know: tiny Navassa Island between Haiti and Jamaica is claimed by both the USA and Haiti! Side 2 concentrates on the eastern islands of the Caribbean, such as Hispaniola (Haiti and the Dominican Republic), Puerto Rico and the US and British Virgin Islands, Turks & Caicos, and the Lesser Antilles chain of island countries, such as Antigua, Guadeloupe, Barbados, and Trinidad/Tobago, among others.

Coverage then extends westward along the Venezuelan coastline to include the Dutch possessions of Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao. Interestingly, there is a small island called Isla Mona west of Puerto Rico on the map that I have never heard of. There are also two Bonaire islands. This is a very interesting map! The most popular cruise line routes are shown; most start either from Puerto Rico or from southern Florida. The map also includes a Top Attractions list, and dozens of local points of interest related to each island.

It is a combination of larger islands in the west and a string of small islands in the east. Some can be shown as separate maps, but others are too small (or too lacking in market appeal) to be mapped adequately as folded paper maps. This atlas covers the Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands in the north with Cuba, the Cayman Islands, Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico in scales ranging from 1:18,000 for Puerto Rico to 1:600,000 for Cuba The atlas is the same size as all ITM atlases (8 x5 or 21x13.5cm) and has a straight spine edge with title for displaying spine outwards on store shelves, if desired. Essentially, this atlas covers six different areas mapped by ITMB folded maps and adds the Turks area. Inset maps of Freeport, Nassau, Havana, Varadero, Georgetown, Kingston, Port Au Prince, Santo Domingo, and San Juan are included. The level of detail is identical with ITM s folded maps; this is a marketing concept for those wishing the convenience of information in a convenient book format, with no loss of detail.

Fra ITM: Armenia and Azerbaijan at 1:430,000 on a double-sided, indexed map from ITMB, with each country accompanied by a street plan of its capital. Diverse ethnography of the region is indicated on an inset.

On one side is Armenia with most of Nagorno-Karabakh, plus the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic of Azerbaijan and much of Georgia including Tbilisi. The reverse, with a small overlap, is the remainder of Azerbaijan. Topography of the region is shown by altitude colouring in feet, with heights of peaks given in metres (and not in feet as indicated in the map legend). Mountain passes are annotated with months when passable. Swamp areas are marked and national parks or protected areas highlighted. The map shows the region’s road and rail networks, including selected seasonal tracks, and indicates local airports. Symbols highlight various places of interest: historical sites, beaches, winter sport areas, etc. All place names are in the Latin alphabet only. Latitude and longitude lines are drawn at 1° intervals. Each country has a separate index. Street plans of central Yerevan and Baku name main streets and highlight various places of interest including selected foreign embassies. Also provided is an inset showing the distribution of various ethnographic groups.

IMPORTANT - PLEASE NOTE: international and provincial boundaries are not marked precisely enough to give a clear picture of the current political situation in the region, including enclaves and border crossings.

Two of the most interesting countries to emerge from the collapse of the dreaded Soviet Union were Georgia and Armenia. Both are still fragile economies tied closely to modern-day Russia, but are both very proud independent countries. Georgia occupies one side of the map sheet, with a detailed inset map of Tbilisi, the capital. The country shares a long border with Russia and borders on Turkey to the south. Batum (Batu) is the main port, with ferry services across the Black Sea to Trabzon, Istanbul, and Novorossijsk. For visitors, the main attraction must be the country’s many picturesque churches, but fortresses would enjoy second place. We have tried to mark roads by quality as well as importance.

The other side of the map sheet concentrates on Armenia and its capital of Yerevan This country is the location of Mount Aragat, an extinct volcano that is the highest point of land in Transcaucasia. Armenia is an ancient Christian country and its monasteries are well-worth visiting. The one in Geghard dates from 1215 and is a World Heritage site. Lake Sevan is the largest body of water in the Caucasus region. The country borders Georgia, Turkey, and Azerbaijan and small parts of those countries show on the map.

Chile is a very long, thin country, so is best portrayed in a series of three strip maps. This enables a scale that expands information while retaining ease of use. Printed on durable plastic paper, the ITMB map is hardy enough to stand up to any trip. The map also includes inset maps of central Santiago, Santiago region, Santiago transit, Easter Island, and Robinson Crusoe Island (Alexander Selkirk was the unfortunate real-life castaway immortalized in Robert Louis Stevenson’s marvelous fictional account of Robinson Crusoe).

Fra ITM: 4th edition 2015. Easter Island is so isolated that it is not certain whether it is part of Polynesia or an off-shoot of South America. Geologically, it is neither; just a volcanic lump in the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean. Its original inhabitants probably came from Polynesia; since supplanted by migrants from Chile, which is the political authority governing the island. Regardless, it is an intriguing place, famous for the Maoi – giant heads originally raised to protect family holdings. These huge, mysterious heads rest in various locations on the island and are one of the wonders of the world. This map also includes a detailed map of Santiago de Chile, the capital of Chile, for the simple reason that all flights to Easter Island originate in that city, so everyone going to Easter Island needs a map of Santiago as well. The central banking and shopping district is well-served by four separate rapid transit lines and the map includes such attractions as parks, the railway station, the funicular, and the gondola ride. The reverse side of the map is an innovation for this title. The northern half of Chile is shown in two detailed portion maps, side by side. The far north, from the Peruvian border near Arica to Vina el Mar is shown on the first map, along with all crossings into neighbouring countries. The other map continues south from Vina del Mar/ Valparaiso to well south of Puerto Mont. This map would include Santiago, Talca, Concepcion, Temuco, and the Austral Highway as far south as Cochrane, which is close to the famous Laguna San Rafael National Park and its ice fields. It covers the portion of the Great Wall of China that all visitors see, near Badaling (scale 1:280.000), and also shows those sections that have disappeared over time, or have fallen into disrepair. As well, the famous Ming tombs of former emperors is also shown, as well as the Marco Polo bridge on the western edge of Beijing, so-named in honour of the famous trader/explorer who set out from this point on his return trip to Europe. This time, we have printed our Beijing/great Wall map in durable ITM plastic; printed double-sided.

Hong Kong is a double-sided map in scale 1:10.000/1:60.000, printed on waterproof paper.A street plan of Hong Kong with Kowloon at 1:10,000 and on the reverse a road map of the HK Special Administrative Region at 1:60,000, plus a diagram of the transport network. The street plan show Hong Kong and Kowloon at 1:10,000 with colouring for the main traffic arteries, very clear presentation of the highway junctions, and marking for one way streets. Where appropriate, MTR and KCR stations are shown with multiple entrances/exits, and the map also shows the double-decker tram line, the Mid-Levels Escalator and the ferry connections across the Victoria Harbour and Kowloon Bay. The plan also shows pedestrianized streets and those with staircases in the hilly part of the Hong Kong Island. Various places of interest and facilities are highlighted, including selected hotels. On the reverse is an indexed road map of the Hong Kong SAR at 1:60,000, extending north to Shenzehen. Altitude colouring shows the topography. Railway and ferry connections are marked and numerous places of interest are highlighted. On both sides place names are given in the Latin alphabet only, with on the road map selected location also shown in Chinese. The map includes a diagram of the transport network.
