Japan is a very interesting country to visit. It divides naturally into northern, central, and western regions. This map concentrates on the far north island of Hokkaido, which is very different than the rest of Japan, and includes a detailed inset map of central Sapporo, its main city. The best way to tour the island is by train, and Hokkaido is now joined to the main island of Honshu by a very long undersea rail tunnel.
The second side of the map is equally important, covering the main island of Honshu from Tokyo north to its northern tip and the northern coast from Toyama to Aomori. The best way to travel around Japan is by using a rail pass. Shinkansen trains are high-speed and great for travelling distances, but local trains are more fun and get you to destinations not covered by the faster trains, such as the north coast.
